Drawing

Drawing class is more than just a drawing course; it is an essential foundation for understanding the basics of art as a whole. In my life drawing class, students begin by learning the characteristics of various dry mediums and how to handle them to create a wide range of values. Simultaneously, they learn to understand forms through geometric shapes, followed by the relationship between light and shadow and how these interact with objects.

For students who may lack a strong foundation in drawing, observing and drawing moving objects from the start can sometimes discourage them and make the process less enjoyable. To address this, I incorporate plaster casts and still-life objects into the curriculum. This allows students to focus on understanding and achieving a sense of completion with each drawing session, building their confidence to move to the next level. My goal is to ensure that every class provides students with the tools and mindset to progress in their skills.

Each session begins with specific demonstrations closely related to the day's content. These demonstrations help students visually grasp the steps involved in completing a drawing, making the process more accessible and engaging.

For the final project, students apply everything they’ve learned throughout the semester to express a theme of their choosing. With a focus on the human form, they independently plan their composition, prepare reference materials, and determine the values and densities within their drawings. This project offers them a valuable experience in independently completing a fully realized drawing from start to finish, showcasing their growth and newfound confidence.
